The Question Pregnant Women Never Want to Hear

Are you ready for the question pregnant women NEVER want to hear?

“How much weight have you gained?”

You might be thinking, really?? But please, don’t laugh. While pregnant, I have been asked this question more times than I’d like to admit. It began when I started to really show, which was around 20 weeks. Here’s what a pregnant woman hears when people say this, “Wow, you look huge.” Okay, maybe not all pregnant woman hear that, but that is what I hear.

Most of the people asking this question are well-intentioned, I am sure. Yet, this is not what you want to hear as your pregnant body swells and you see the numbers on the scale rising. On top of that, the abundance of hormones surging through your body makes it harder to react when things like this are said. No matter how little or how much weight you gain in pregnancy, there comes a point that you do not want it to be publicized.

My opinion? Don’t ask a pregnant woman how much she weighs. If she wants to tell you — great. If it never comes up, then she probably never wanted to discuss it. It’s as simple as that.

In my 10 Amazing Pregnancy Favorites You Don’t Want to Miss, I mention one of my favorite pregnancy blogs, Pregnant Chicken . She has an entry called “Clever Pregnancy Comebacks” to questions like the one above. She has some witty suggestions to say back to the helplessly clueless people who ask these awkward questions.

  1. With me its not a case of asking how much weight i’ve gained as much as it involves comments on how big my belly is! ‘Really? Only six months?’ As if there is a standard size for every month and every woman.
